My gut reaction coupled with what I’ve learned of this card is this:

Fours represent earth, matter, a solid foundation, plenty of room to accomplish a goal.  They are energy filtering in from Heaven above, taking physical form on Earth below.  From inspiration to manifestation, the four is formed.

Swords are representative of Air, thought, intellect, logic, reason, communication. Steel resolve and cutting through nonsense.

In this card, we see a man resting on a bed, one sword below him, longways – left to right, parallel with his body.  Above him, pointing toward him, three additional swords.  He is peaceful, with his hands held as if in prayer. The straight line that goes up and down is that of divine energy, the straight line that goes left to right represents physical matter.  The swords in the position they’re shown on this card represent divine energy filtering through the sleeping quarrent, to manifest in physical form on earth.

In the corner of this card is a stained glass window, a symbol of divine knowledge.

The message of this card, when upright, is to recognize that the knowledge and wisdom of how to manifest desires comes while in sleep.   In short, it advises to take no immediate action, but “sleep on it” and see how you feel about it after. Think it over. There’s a peacefulness to this card, a restful feeling.  There’s no panic, no frustration, no fear, no trying to force things.  He’s just resting, praying, waiting for the Divine Insights to reveal themselves to him.

Reversed? Well… could indicate trouble sleeping, refusing the divine wisdom, or the NEED to do as the quarrent in this card does.

Here’s what the other sources say:

From LearnTarot.com:

resting
taking a break
giving your body time to heal
avoiding overexertion
finding peace and quiet
relaxing body and soul
taking life easy

contemplating
gaining a better perspective
listening for your Inner Voice
taking time alone to think
standing back from the situation
examining your motivations
reviewing where you are

quietly preparing
consolidating inner resources
making sure your base is secure
getting ready for the future
coming to terms with what is
tieing up loose ends
stabilizing

The Swords cards all stand for trials of some kind, but the Four suggests feelings of peace and stillness. Why is this card different? Because it represents the challenge to be quiet! Sometimes resting and doing nothing is the ultimate challenge. Activity can be a habit that is very difficult to break. There is always so much to do, and modern society beguiles us with its attractions and distractions. The result is we forget to stop and be still.

In readings, the Four of Swords is often a sign that you need to slow down and get some rest. If you are recovering from an illness, allow yourself quiet time to heal. Even if you feel completely healthy, you are risking getting sick if you don’t take a break.

The Four of Swords also represents taking the time to think things over without hurry. It is important to step back and gain perspective. This is especially true when you are facing an ordeal or big event. You need quiet preparation time to gather your strength and center your energy. Picture an Olympic diver on the high board. She doesn’t climb the ladder and then dash out. She stops, motionless as she readies herself for the burst of activity to come. This is the only way to bring the best to our endeavors.

Sometimes the Four of Swords implies that you are or could be shifting focus from the external to the internal. When we are silent, we can more easily go within. The knight in the picture appears to be praying or meditating deeply. Actually, he appears to be dead! For those who are addicted to activity, rest and quiet can seem like death, but that is certainly not the case. Stillness holds its own rewards, but they must be recognized and sought.

From Aeclectic Tarot:

FOURS

Fours are ruled by the Emperor. Like both the Emperor and his throne they signify a kind of stability, a holding pattern if you will. For a moment, everything is still, solid, rooted, established. This can be positive, a solid foundation, or negative, something that refuses to budge or change.

Four of Swords

A young man rests on a pallet, three swords above, one under him. Though this card (in the Rider-Waite deck) makes the young man look dead, it is really only about taking a break. This is the “meditation” card. The card advises the Querent that they need to get away, rest, recuperate. Especially after the Three of Swords!

The card indicates that the Querent has been facing mental or emotional stress, arguments, misunderstandings or verbal abuse, or that they’re ill or injured. A healing retreat is needed, time to clear the head, heart and soul, or just fix a damaged body. In this case, the stillness of the “4” is healing and positive. A quiet, unchanging scene is needed.

From Solitary Witch: Book of Shadows for the Next Generation by Silver Raven Wolf:

The need for rest and relaxation; the need for a stress-free environment; time to take a vacation, preferably around nature; a welcome release or a change for the better.

And, from Numerology and the Divine Triangle by Faith Javane and Dusty Bunker:

Rest, relief, retreat, convalescence. This is a period of retreat in which your mind seeks rest from the cares of the world. Conflicts have ended, worries are over; now you desire peace and quiet to gather your strength. You can now analyze your situation and logically decide how to proceed. You are able to put even the smallest details of your life into perspective and clearly see what has real value.

Your solitude may be a convalescent period after an illness, a self-imposed vacation for rest and relaxation or an enforced retreat arising from social unrest. Whatever the impetus that propelled you to this space, it requires concentration and meditation on the experiences that have brought you here. If used wisely, this period can lead to a change for the better. The conclusions you arrive at subconsciously will affect your future actions.

Tarot Symbolism: The figure has assumed the proper position for rest, inferring that rest from anxiety and strain has been earned. The swords are put away; three hang on the wall, and one is placed lenghwise along the couch. This shows that, if need be, action would still be taken to preserve peace. This is a card of peace and quiet, not death. The window depicts outer activity. A man is shown kneeling before a woman, symbolizing that the conscious mind (male) is still a slave to the subconscious (female). To the resting figure all is serene; the sword of discrimination has been used and put away.

Astrological Correspondence: Third decan Libra. The mental side of Libra is strong in this decan; therefore, intellectual pursuits will attract you. You could do well in teaching, preaching, lecturing or writing. You have an amiable disposition and a refined manner, and you are extremely adaptable. You are logical and fair and believe in mercy and kindness. This is really the most balanced of the Libra decans. You have the integrity to be a judge. Your standards are high. Your greatest desire is for order, harmony, beauty and peace in your life.

*Planting Day

** Lammas (Lughnasadh) Celebration of the Harvest. Modern times make appreciation for harvest difficult, but back in the day, people’s livelihood was based on their crops. The harvest meant everything, and today marks the day of the traditional celebration of harvest, when people were able to reep the rewards of the seeds they’d planted in spring, and the laboring they’ve done through the summer to tend to their crops.

Today’s Tarot: Four of Pentacles, Inverted
Today’s Fairy Oracle: Making New Friends, Inverted

Thursday:
*Governed by Jupiter – expansion, money, prosperity, generosity (ties right in to today’s tarot card!)

Color:
*Green

The Moon:
*1st Quarter Waxing in Libra; Void-of-Course @ 4:01 a.m. US Central; Enters Scorpio @ 6:26 a.m. US Central

Waxing Moon: Waxing moon is where the moon is growing in the sky. Each night for two full weeks she grows in light, getting bigger and bigger in the sky until she reaches full moon. During the two weeks that the moon is waxing, it’s the best time for trying to draw things to you, encourage growth, or to “magnify” certain things in your life. Want your nails to grow longer? File them while the moon is waxing. Want your hair to grow faster? Trim it during waxing moon. Want to increase your finances? Focus your energies on improving finances during waxing moon. Waxing moon is the best time for starting new things, seeking new employment, or establishing “gain” in any area of your life (but remember, the zodiac position of the moon is also influencial, so reference where the moon is in the zodiac prior to working any magick).

When the moon is waxing, we feel more positive, more energized, more outgoing.

*Moon in Libra: Favors cooperation, compromise, social activities, balance, friendship, and partnership

*Moon Void-of-Course: Just before the Moon enters a new sign, it will make one final aspect (angular relationship) to another planet. Between that last aspect and the entrance of the Moon into the next sign it is said to be void-of-course. Activities begun when the Moon is void-of-course rarely come to fruition, or they turn out very differently than planned.

*Moon in Scorpio: Increases awareness of psychic power. Precipitates psychic crises and ends connections thoroughly. People have a tendency to brood and become secretive.

Justice

Justice

Well, I could have used this card yesterday as a warning about that speeding ticket!

Justice is one of the Major Arcana cards.  There are 22 Major Arcana – which act as “trump cards” over the rest of the deck, and chronologically, they tell the story of The Fool’s Journey.  They are “phases” we all go through repeatedly, or what I like to call “checkpoints” on our personal road map. Click here to read the story of The Fool’s Journey from LearnTarot.com. Eventually, I’ll be writing my own version, but for now I’ll reference what I know.

Justice is all about fairness, balance, and right actions.  It has everything to do with law, order, the legal system, lawyers, courtrooms, police – and every other association with Justice one can think of.

Here’s what the sources say:

Starting this time with the book, “Solitary Witch: Book of Shadows for the New Generation” by Silver Raven Wolf:

Justice; equality; being fair; court cases or legal proceedings; finding reasonable solutions to difficulties; impartial judgments. *Astrological association: Libra.

With Libra being the associated astrological sign, that puts this card in the realm of East, the element of Air, the season of Autumn, and the suit of swords. Notice that the person in this card holds the scales of justice in one hand, and a sword in the other.

Interestingly enough, in the 22 Major Arcana Cards, Justice follows the Wheel of Fortune! (See this morning’s Coffee Thoughts and July’s Tarot reading to see why that’s relavent to me right now).

Here’s from LearnTarot.com

respecting justice
insisting on fairness
acting on ethical principles
being involved in legal concerns
committing to honesty
seeking equality
being impartial
trying to do what is right
assuming responsibility
settling old accounts and debts
being accountable
acknowledging the truth
admitting involvement
handling the situation
doing what has to be done
preparing for a decision
weighing all sides of an issue
setting a course for the future
balancing all factors
determining right action
choosing with full awareness
understanding cause and effect
accepting the results you created
seeing how you chose your situation
recognizing the action of karma
knowing that what is makes sense
making connections between events

Sometimes Justice is a signal to do what needs to be done. A time comes when responsibilities must be accepted, and accounts settled. The past will continue to haunt you if you do not recognize your mistakes and make amends for them. You will need to weigh matters carefully and perhaps make important decisions about your future course.

On Card 11 we see the familiar figure of Justice. She has the scales of equality and impartial judgment in one hand, and the sword of decision in the other. In the tarot, Justice represents the understanding that life is ultimately fair and just. Even though the vagaries of day-to-day life tend to make us doubt this fact, Justice reminds us that there is divine balance. Notice the similarity between the Emperor and Justice. Both cards stand for universal order; the Emperor in its underlying structure, Justice, in the action of karma – cause and effect.

There is a serious feel to Card 11 – the tone of the courtroom. This card refers to legal matters of all kinds, but is not restricted to them. The courts are where judgments are made and decisions rendered. Our legal system is the official arena in which we explore the principles of Justice – fairness, impartiality and the quest for truth.

In readings, Justice often appears when you are concerned with doing what is right or making sure you receive your due. This card can also appear when you are feeling the impact of a past mistake or good deed. The cause you set in motion at one time is now returning to you as an effect.

Here’s from AeclecticTarot:

JUSTICE

Basic Symbols

The Justice figure seated or standing, scales in one hand (usually left), upraised sword in the other hand. Sometimes blindfolded.

Basic Tarot Story

The Fool is looking for a new path, a new aspiration and inspiration for his life. Sitting uncertain at a cross-roads, he notices a blind wise woman listening to two brothers argue over an inheritance. They have come to her for judgement. One brother has the whole inheritance, the other has nothing. “I ask that all of it be given to me,” the poor brother demands, “Not only because I have a better right to it, but because I will not be wasteful with it, as he is!” But the rich brother protests, “It is rightfully mine and that’s all that should matter, not what I do with it!” The woman listens, then awards half of the rich brother’s inheritance to the poor brother. The Fool thinks this only fair, but neither brother is happy. The rich one hates losing half his wealth, and the poor one feels he ought to have gotten all.

“You were fair,” he remarks to the woman after they have left. “Yes, I was,” she answers plainly. “With only half the inheritance, the rich one will stop being so wasteful. And the poor one will have as much as he needs. Even though they cannot see it, this decision was good for both.”

The Fool thinks on this, and new insight on his own life comes to mind. He realizes that he has spent his life achieving worldly ambitions, physical goods, while leaving his spiritual self to starve, primarily because he didn’t want to make the sacrifices necessary to feed his spiritual self. Now, he sees that this is necessary, the only path he has not walked, one he must walk to regain his equilibrium. Thanking the woman, he heads out with new purpose. It is time to balance his own inner scales.

Basic Tarot Meaning

With Libra as its ruling sign, Justice is about cold, objective balance through reason or natural force. This is the card that tells the Querent that they can’t keep smoking and drinking without consequences to their health. It is the card that advises cutting out waste and insists that the Querent make adjustments, do whatever is necessary to bring things back into balance: physically, emotionally, socially, spiritually. In a more mundane sense, this card may signal a court case, legal documents, adjustments in a marriage or partnership. The outcome of all of these may not be exactly what the Querent wants, but it will be a scrupulously fair outcome. If the card is reversed, it can indicate bias, obstruction of the law, or legal complications.

Thirteen’s Observations

I think Justice is a good card (as compared to Strength) to stand as the first of the next ten cards of the Major Arcana. The reason I think it right is because with it we move from the physical world (first ten cards) into the metaphysical world (next ten). When I look at Justice, I always see the two worlds balanced on her scales. “You’ve spent all your time in one,” she seems to be saying, time to move into the other and balance things out.”

One thing to remember about the Justice card is that it is not about punishment, good, bad, right or wrong. It is about adjustment. The sword suggests that sometimes this won’t be pleasant. Justice pares things down with that sword so that the scales end up equal. The message is to do what’s necessary, no matter how hard, how disagreeable, in order to gain, or re-gain equilibrium. It is not a nice card, but in its way, it is a very wise card.

Comparison with the Gemini symbol, the Twins:
Geminis are said to have a dual nature, as symbolized by twins. This duality also represents exchange and interaction. The sign of Gemini is closely associated with exchange of ideas, communication, and trade.

The sign of Gemini is thought to be very adaptable and flexible, sometimes to the point of “being” two different personalities.

The glyph for Gemini depicts two lines joined together, showing the symbolism of the twins, and the duality of the nature of the sign.

Sun in Gemini
(The Sun is in Gemini from approximately May 21 to June 20, depending on the year).

With the Sun in Gemini, the urge for self-expression is strong. These natives are often just as interested in collecting information as they are in sharing it. Curious to a fault, Geminis have a finger in every pie.

Solar Geminis are flexible and changeable people. Their ability to adapt quickly to new situations generally gains them plenty of friends and social contacts. Usually quite clever and witty, Geminis enjoy intellectual conversations and they are easily bored if they are not getting enough mental stimulation.

Often quite adept at fitting in with others, Geminis easily adopt the moods of those around them. They are friends to people from all walks of life, and are not easily intimidated. Their ability to detach themselves can make Geminis very objective and observant, but a little difficult to get close to. Although they often have many friends, intimacy doesn’t come as easily to Solar Geminis.

It can be difficult to know what Gemini really feels at any given moment. They are often very impressionable and scattered. There is usually a nervous air to Geminis that can make more personal characters a little uneasy. It is not always intuitive to trust Geminis to be loyal or to keep secrets.

Geminis often flit about, moving quickly and keeping busy every step of the way. Many people with this position of the Sun have gained quite a bit of knowledge in their lifetimes, but they don’t often possess specialized knowledge. This is because Geminis have relatively short attention spans. Restlessness is especially common with this position of the Sun.

Usually quite affable, Geminis enjoy the “light” side of life. This tendency to take things lightly makes them quite pleasing to be around; but it can be maddening to people seeking support on the deeper issues in life.

Geminis are both interesting and interested. Their wit can be dazzling and their changeability dizzying. At the very least, Geminis will seldom bore you.

Any idea you come up with will be met with applause.
