Intro: This “song” is my personal anthem. It was inspired by a spiritual journey writing workshop, a year long course in which spirituality was developed by the art of writing. One of the assignments was to create our own flag and personal anthem. I had no problem creating the flag, but the anthem gave me issues. Then, one night, I was nearly asleep when the first line crept through my mind. I tried to ignore it, but the more I ignored it, the more sick I felt until I finally had to get out of bed. I wrote the line down, waited for more, but nothing happened. I went back to bed, and just as I was almost asleep, the second line fluttered through. Again, I tried to ignore it, and again, I got ill. I got up and wrote the line down, waited for more, and though I no longer felt ill, no more inspiration came, so I returned to bed. This continued through the course of the entire night until dawn presented a complete piece. I had done it… I had written my personal anthem. Even now, years later, I sing this to myself when things get tough… and to my absolute delight, my children sing it, too.

“Grin and Bear It”

Some days are easy
Some days are hard
Some days hurt so bad
they leave permanent scars

some days are simple
Some days are calm
Some days I can’t get
the sweat off my palms

I could take this pain and share it
or toughen up, grin and bear it…
and though it hurts me all the while
you’ll find me with a smile…
grin and bear it

Some days are dreary
and seem twice as long
Those are the days when
everything goes wrong…

Those are the days
when want turns to yearn
Those are the days
when the pain starts to burn

I could take this pain and share it
or toughen up, grin and bear it…
and though some days are filled with pain
each day’s a blessing just the same
grin and bear it

He sends me flowers
She sings my praise
No one understands, then
why I have these some days

Some days just fly by
at the speed of light
those are the days
when a few things go right

I could take this pain and share it
or toughen up, grin and bear it…
and though it hurts me all the while
you’ll find me with a smile…
grin and bear it…
grin and bear it
